15.10// The Ballbag

It's been a while, but fear not dear reader(s), we're still here. Inside Left has spent most of the last week with the fysio working on a nasty shoulder injury as well as trying to get his back, well, back in order. The ravages of old age on this otherwise athletic body are being to play their part and every day things like walking, bending, moving and so on sure 'aint as easy as they used to be.

Nevertheless, after a week of carefully controlled movements, total alchohol abstinance and recovery from an asperin overdose (this last as a result of a slight misunderstanding - Inside Left thought the doctor said "3 tablets per day", when in fact he said "3 tablets, one a day for 3 days") we're back and ready to go.

Someone who would probably be considering an aspirin overdose is George Burley. Having survived not one but two near death experiences, he got himself a third one when his ragtag side of hopefulls, nearly-rans and ought-not-to-have-been-picked got pumped 2-0 by Japan. For those of a nervous disposition, the highlights can be viewed here.

OK, so there were a lot of call-offs - 10 apparently - but Japan where fielding a second-string side too so we shouldn't just gloss over this game, blaming the injuries for what amounts to yet another embarrasing defeat. Christophe Berra got things off to a good start when he put through his own net, and shortly afterwards Honda drove (djing boom) the ball home from close range to put the result beyond doubt.

George now has a chance to save his sinking reputation when he takes the team to Cardiff for a friendly against Wales on the 14th November and back to Glasgow for a meeting with the Czech Republic in March of 2010 - ironically enough, Burley's first game in charge as manager was against the Czech's. It was another game plagued with call-offs. How did that game end? Anyone remember?
