23.11// The Monday Ballbag

Phew, what a relief to have good 'ole regular football back at the weekends. I can't be doing with international breaks, which I put in the same category as a commercial break in a really good film - annoying and totally pointless.

But it's all business as usual as the Highland League need only three games to outscore the entire SPL in one day, George Burley is not the only manager to lose his job, and Dundee lift the first silverware of the season.

So aye, Spurs may have put 9 past a hapless Wigan, but the boys in the Highland League have done us proud in a net-bustin' scoring display that nearly outscored the SPL in a 2:1 ratio.

While our seniors managed 15 goals in 6 games, Buckie Thistle, Huntly and Cove Rangers where the winners in games in which 25 goals where scored. Buckie clocked up a 6-1 win over bottom-of-the-table Strathspey Thistle, Huntly piled on more misery on Clachnacuddin as they ran out 7-1 winners, and league leaders Cove Rangers smashed Lossiemouth 7-3.

25 goals. Three games. Amazing.

In the SPL, a late goal from Darren Dodds saw Dundee United beat Celtic by 2 goals to 1. The win puts them level with Hibs in fourth spot (Hibs only managing a 1-1 draw with St Mirren), while Rangers take over at the top following their 3-0 win over Kilmarnock. Hearts slumped to a surprise defeat against St Johnstone - the Jambo's ended the game with only 10 men as they went down 2-1. A Gary McDonald goal earned Aberdeen a 1-1 draw against Motherwell (and saved Mark McGhee's blushes), while Falkirk narrowed the gap at the bottom with a 2-0 win over Hamilton.

Clyde manager John Brown has left the club following the Bully Wee's 3-1 home defeat to East Fife, making him the second manager this season to be sacked, following the dismissal of Davie Irons at Morton last month.

Dundee pick up the first silverware of the season. They beat division rivals Inverness Caley Thistle 3-2 in the final of this years Challenge Cup. It was an  exciting game that saw Caley 2-0 up at the break with goals from Adam Rooney and Nauris Bulvitis. The same Bulvitis then put the ball through his own net, before Gary Harkins equalised for the Dee; Craig Forsyth got the late winner. The win gives Jocky Scott's team their second Challenge Cup win since 1990

This week also sees Rangers back in European action as they take on VfB Stuttgart in the Champions League Group G game on Tuesday. A win for Walter Smiths men would still leave them bottom of the group, unless they somehow manage to win by 8 clear goals. And given some of the crazy scorelines we've seen this weekend, whose to say what'll happen.
