We get out the calculator and the crystal ball and take a quick trawl through the crucial games coming up this weekend.
Division One
Inverness Caley celebrated their return to the SPL with a 7-0 thumping of Ayr United on Saturday. With only the one team going up, there's no play-off places to compete for, so Dundee, Queen of the South and Ross County can take it easy this weekend.About the only team who might have a bit of a game on their hands are Dunfermline, who travel to Airdrie for their final game of the season. Airdrie have staged a remarkable recovery, losing only twice in their last 10 games (including that landmark 3-0 defeat of league leaders Dundee that cost Jocky Scott his job).
By contrast, Ayr United, the team currently propping up the table lost seven of their last 10 games, with wins against Queen of the South and Partick Thistle being the only rays of sunshine in an otherwise miserable season.
The final team in the 'at risk' category is Morton. If Airdrie are on a winning streak and Ayr United on a losing streak, then Morton are the score-draw streak. The Ton have drawn four of their last 10 games.
» Probable outcome: Airdrie haven't beaten Dunfermline all season, but their last encounter back at the beginning of March had Dunfermline with a lot more to play for then they do today. That last fixture ended in a draw, suggesting that Airdrie could do something here, particularly as they have the form and the have the motivation. With home advantage, they'll win, sending Ayr United back to the Second.
» Freaky outcome: Airdrie beating Dunfermline and Ayr beating Morton 5-0 would see Morton go down on goal difference.
Scottish Second Division
Stirling Albion missed their chance to take the title when they could only manager a 3-3 draw with play-off contenders Cowdenbeath. It leaves Division Two desperately tight - Alloa could still take the title with a win over Cowdenbeath, but only if Stirling lose away to Brechin.Down at the bottom, Clyde are beyond salvation, their relegation having already been confirmed. But for the teams in seventh, eighth and ninth place, there is still much at stake. Any of those three sides - East Fife, Stenhousemuir and Arbroath - could still make the relegation play-offs,
East Fife travel up the coast to Arbroath, needing a win as much as their opponents to keep themselves out of play-off trouble. The Fifers are one point ahead of Arbroath and boast a superior goal difference, so a draw would suit them even if Stenhousemuir overtake them with a win against Peterhead.
» Probable outcome: The good news for Alloa fans is that they've not lost to Cowdenbeath all season, but they've left it too late: Stirling will beat Brechin. At the bottom, Stenhousemuir will lose to Peterhead and Arbroath will beat East Fife, sending Stennie into the relegation play-offs.
» Freaky outcome: News of Stenhousemuir losing to Peterhead could see Arbroath and East Fife kicking the ball to each other without actually trying to score, as a draw would see both sides in the Second Division for another season. And if Brechin are losing to Stirling, a win by 10 clear goals would see Peterhead making the play-offs.
Scottish Third Division
With no relegation from Division Three, the final day fixture between the two sided propping up the senior Scottish leagues, Elgin and Montrose, has no real relevance. While the championship flag is being unfurled at Livingston, the wooden spoon will be handed to Montrose. The Gable Endies' season is stark reflection on last when they where within two points of a play-off place; this season they will finish bottom, either ten, seven or four points behind last season's holders of the dubious honour of being Scotland's worst senior league side, Elgin
The two games of interest are those at the Cliftonhill Stadium in Coatbridge and Station Park, Forfar. Albion Rovers take on a much improved Stranraer side (who beat second-placed Forfar last Saturday), needing a win to jump into the play-off spot, assuming Queens Park lose at Forfar.
Queens Park got themselves into this final day stramash on account of their defeat at home to Elgin City last week, meaning Saturdays fixture is a must-win encounter for Scotland's oldest football team. Albion's win over Berwick on the same day should have been a stepping stone to promotion, if only they hadn't lost to Champions Livingston in mid-week.
» Probable Outcome: Stranraer are on a good run of form, so they've got a good chance of causing an upset. Albion will be fired up though and with home advantage, I can see them overtaking Queens Park, who I reckon will lose away at Forfar. So, Albion Rovers take the final play-off place.
» Freaky outcome: Berwick could still make the play-offs if both Albion and Queens Park lose, and The Borderers beat Annan by at least six goals!
