a.k.a: the "palindromic date" update. So while everyone is bored watching the Euro ´08 snooze fest, Inside Left valiantly (and also quite voluntarily) stays behind and keeps an eye on the only country that matters - dear auld Alba.
Despite the veritable showcase of Europe's finest and most expensive talent on our telly, we continue to bring you all the latest from around the country. I mean, where else could you learn that Queens Park are heading over to Germany to play a series of friendlies against SW Eppendorf, VfB Gunnigfeld and SG Wattenscheid on the 15th, 17th and 19th of July? Or that Dumbarton will play an extra pre-season friendly against St Mirren on the 22nd and that SPL new boys Hamilton Accies will travel up the Clyde the day after? And who else would tell you that Aberdeen have dropped their interest in Richie Foran, supposedly not for financial reasons (but probably more because of his atrocious disciplinary record)? Or that in advance of next season, Scottish referees are being given advice by sport psychologists to help them deal with irrate Dundee United managers? Who? Inside Left, that's blimmin' well who!
Hey, over in Arbroath they're keeping the pre-season really short. Lichties boss John McGlashan has planned in three evening sessions for his team, and this is before the official pre-season starts on the 21st June! Arbroath won promotion to the Second division last season after beating Stranraer. Despite losing that play-off, Stranraer where also promoted when Gretna went out of business.
Up in Dingwall, Dyron Daal continues his tour of Scotland as he signs up at Second Division champions Ross County. The former Dundee, St Johnstone and CF Fuenlabrada player was brought over from Utrecht by Aberdeen's Jimmy Calderwood and scored 2 goals in 7 appearances for the Dons before being farmed out to Dundee.
Lastly, to keep you amused until the next update, enjoy this short video showing life at the unglamourous end of the league. Fraserburgh FC, known as 'The Broch', play in the Highland League, having joined in 1921, and winning it on three occasions, most recently in 2002. Their biggest rivals not so long ago where Peterhead, a team from 17 miles down the road and against whom they played their first ever game (as well as recording their biggest ever win 10-0 in 1974). Times have changed though; Peterhead now ply their trade in the Scottish Second Division and Fraserburgh are still in the Highland League. They finished 5th last season (putting 8 past Inside Left favourite Fort William!) and start the 2008/09 campaign at home to Clachnacuddin.
Right, history is repeating itself on the telly as Germany take on Poland. Time to run over and put on that episode of Taggart I taped the other night, the one where Taggart and Livingston find a woman's severed leg and suspect foul play. Comments and insults to the usual address.
