The Second Round of the Alba Challenge Cup continues with ten of the sixteen sides left in the competition in action this evening.
The second batch of games will take place tomorrow evening when East Fife play Airdrie and East Stirlingshire take on Morton. The final game of the round between holders Dunfermline and Queen of the South will take place on the 20th August - this fixture was moved as Queen of the South start their UEFA campaign on Thursday.
Alloa 0 - 2 Clyde
A repeat of last season's Division 1 play-off game - won by Clyde after a remarkable comeback to win 6-5 on aggregate and so remain in the First Division - the pairing of these two sides was always going to be a chance for Alloa to get revenge and for Clyde to put another one over the Wasps. It's early in the season yet, but the form that pushed Alloa to that play-off place has so far deserted them - they're without a point so far this season. Despite some early chances for Alloa, it was Clyde who again came out the winners, as goals from Pat Clarke and Billy Gibson advance the Bully Wee into the next round.
Cowdenbeath 3-2 Albion Rovers
With two away wins in the Cup competitions so far this season, Cowdenbeath where looking to build on the victories in the First round against Elgin City and the League Cup win against Montrose. Somewhat worryingly for the Blue Brazil, their league campaign (and home form) has not seen that Cup form carry through with one win so far, including that heavy opening day defeat to Annan Athletic. Albion Rovers are stuck at the bottom of the table - out of the League Cup and with defeats against Forfar and East Stirling in the league, manager Paul Martin was looking for some good news. Alas, it was not to be as the Wee Rovers lost to a last minute cracker from Brian Fairburn. Paul McQuade opened the scoring for Cowdenbeath just 10 minutes in, but Robert Barr equalised on the thirty minute mark. John Gemmell restored Cowdenbeath's lead on seventy-five minutes with a well taken finish. Willie Martin then put the scores level again with fifteen minutes left on the clock. With time running out and both sides pushing for a goal to avoid extra-time, Brian Fairburn struck the net from 18-yards out to win the game for Cowdenbeath. Rovers will be regretting that penalty miss before half-time, when Davie Hay saved Ceiran Donnelly's effort - the game might well have turned out differently. As it is, Albion will need to regroup and focus on getting their league campaign started.
Raith Rovers 1 - 2 Ross County
At last a win for Ross County - edged out of the League Cup by Airdrie last week and without a point in the First division, the goals from Alex Keddie proved to be enough for the Staggies. Kevin Smith got the goal for Raith. A long, but happy journey back for the Ross County fans, surely hoping that this win will kick-start their season.
Livingston 1 - 0 Forfar Athletic
A crowd of 800 saw Leigh Griffiths head home an Anthony McPartland cross to score on fifty minutes to advance Livi into the quarter finals. Forfar started brightly but where unable to find the net despite hitting the woodwork on several occasions. Rocco Quin, the midfielder on-loan from Celtic, nearly scored on his debut but Forfar keeper Ally Brown was up to the challenge and blocked the effort.
Partick Thistle 4 - 2 Peterhead
Extra time was needed at Firhill to decide the outcome of this game which saw the First division take on the Second division. The visitors got off to a gala start when Craig Gunn goal put Peterhead in front on twenty-three minutes. Substitute Simon Donnelly fired Thistle's equaliser after 52 minutes, his 18-yard shot going in off the foot of a post. With neither side finding a winner in regular time, the game was forced to go into extra-time. Thistle struck first when Stephen McKeown hit the first of his two extra-time goals when two minutes into extra time he headed home Ian Maxwell's effort that had crashed against the bar and into his path. Konrad Kosminki drew the Blue Toon level again shortly afterwards, but Partick sent their visitors back home to the north-east when first Gary Hawkins and then another goal from Stephen McKeown sealed the victory for the Jags.
The Quarter finals will be played on the 7th September.
