Unlike the European Championship Qualifiers, the first round of the CIS Insurance Cup produced no real upsets, but it did provide a lot of goals - 40 in the 10 games played tonight (and that doesn't include the two penalty shoot-outs!).
We being our roundup with the game we featured in our Match Programme earlier today. The result was pretty much as we predicted (though we didn't dare share the score line with you all for fear of disgracing ourselves again) and is a disappointment for north-east football fans on a night when all the teams from that part of the country taking part lost. Ross County, Elgin, Montrose, Forfar and Peterhead where all eliminated from the competition - let's hope Brechin and Arbroath can keep the flag flying for the north-east tomorrow.
Alloa Athletic 2-0 Elgin City
Our featured game today between Alloa Athletic and Elgin City at Recreation Park finished in a win for Alloa (2-0) though it took the Wasps till the second half to score. Andy Scott, who had just replaced Graeme Brown opened the scoring on 70 minutes and Francis Kelly sealed the victory 10 minutes later when he drove the ball past Ally Ridgers in the Elgin goal. The 269 spectators in the ground saw an even game with both sides getting shots on goal, but Alloa's finishing was sharper. Manager Allan Maitland should be pleased with the result. Match Report.
Stranraer 3-6 Morton
A nine-goal cavalcade for the supporters of Stranraer and Morton, though the Morton fans who made the long drive down to Stranraer will be the happier as they came out winners by the odd goal in nine. The 'Ton scored early when Ryan McGuffie scored in the sixth minutes. Brian Wake doubled the lead six minutes later and Morton where cruising towards an easy victory when Ian Russell added a third on the half hour mark. Further goals for Morton's Iain Russell (2), Brian Wake and Erik Paartalu and Stranraer's Stuart McColm and Andy Gibson rounded of the evening. Match Report.
Clyde 4-1 Queens Park
Clyde cruised past Queens Park with some ease, Roddy MacLennan, Billy Gibson firing the Bully Wee into a comfortable 2-0 lead. Paul Harkings gave Clyde a scare when he scored to pull one back for the Spiders with 10 minutes to go, but in their search for an equaliser they left themselves vulnerable and Clyde took advantage - Gary McSwegan made it 3-1 and before the Clyde fans had stopped celebrating, Scott Gemmill added a fourth to assure Clyde's progression into the second round. Match Report.
Stenhousemuir 1-5 St.Johnstone
First Division leaders St Johnstone got a wee scare when they went behind to an early Stenhousemuir goal. Robert Love took advantage of some slack St Johnstone defending to poke the ball past McLean in the 12th minute. St Johnstone levelled the score in the 20th minute through a Paul Sheerin penalty. It took till the final 20 minutes of the game to separate the sides when, in a crazy ten minute spell St Johnstone scored four times through Steve Milne, Derek Holmes (2) and Martin Hardie. The game finished with no player from either side getting booked. Match Report.
Peterhead 0-2 Dunfermline
Just over 1200 fans turned out at Peterhead's Balmoor Stadium to see the Blue Toon finally conceded their first goal in 450 minutes of (pre-season) football when Dunfermline's Grahame Bayne scored just after half-time. Shortly after the restart Andy Kirk added a second for the Pars. Match Report.
Montrose 0-2 Cowdenbeath
Goals at either end of the game settled this game in favour of the Blue Brazil. Darren McGregor scored on six minutes and Brian Fairbairn won the tie nine minutes from the end. The 382 supports inside the ground saw eight players get booked. Match Report.
Partick Thistle 4-3 Forfar Athletic
It took a late extra time goal to separate these two sides. The game finished 2-2 at the end of regular time, Forfar taking an early lead through Fotheringham before McKeown equalized for Thistle. Forfar took the lead again in the 60th minute through Lilley but the lead would not last long. Five minutes later Damon Gray levelled the scores. With no more goals in regular time, referee Smith had only just started extra time when Damon Gray struck again to put Thistle ahead for the first time in the match. With time running out for Forfar, Elliot Smith levelled the scores again. The game looked to be heading for penalties until Scott Chaplain scored in the 112th minute. Match Report.
Ross County 2-3 Airdrie United
There's not been much luck for Ross County so far. A narrow defeat to Dundee at the weekend, and now a narrow extra-time defeat against Airdrie. A low crowd turnout, 860, saw Airdrie United take the lead through former Killie striker Paul Di Giacomo. Former Aberdeen player Dyron Daal equalized for Ross County on the stroke of half-time and the Staggies took the lead through Richie Hart with 20 minutes left on the clock. In the dying minutes the game was forced to go to extra time when Stuart Noble levelled the tie with four minutes to go. Airdrie then booked their place in the next round when Di Giacomo struck again on 112 minutes. Match Report.
Dumbarton 1-1 Annan Athletic (aet Dumbarton win 5-4 on penalties)
An amazing game which saw all but one of the 11 goals coming from the penalty spot! Annan should count themselves unlucky not to build on Saturdays result and now find themselves out of two cup competitions. With the score 0-0 at the end of ninety minutes, Michael Jack, two-goal hero against Cowdenbeath on Saturday scored from the penalty spot following a foul by Dumbarton's Andy Geggan (who was subsequently sent off following his second yellow card). Ray Logan equalised in the dying seconds of the first half of extra time. But with no more goals coming, the match was decided on penalties, Dumbarton coming out 5-4 winners. Match Report.
Albion Rovers 0-0 Raith Rovers (aet Raith win 4-3 on penalties)
Raith Rovers, along with Partick Thistle, are previous winners of the League Cup in this round. They continue to the second round following a poor game at Cliftonhill, Coatbridge. Twelve shots on goal with only 5 on target pretty much sums it up. Raith Rovers played most of the second half and subsequent extra time with only 10 men, former Raith player of the year Iain Davidson having been sent off in the 78th minute. Match Report.
